Will You Watch? Ava Duvernay’s “When They See Us”

Take a look at Ava Duvernay’s “When They See Us”  – a four-part series that covers the Central Park Five.  The series is set to appear on Netflix May 31st. Ava’s work always appears so timely. She riveted us with 13th – a  documentary that explored the current criminal justice system and how It continues in the tradition of upholding institutions and laws of inequality. 

In 1990 the lives of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise, the black and Latino teenagers from Harlem would never be the same. The group of young men were tried and wrongly convicted for the rape and violent beating of Trisha Meili. It what can only be described as a miscarriage of justice, the young men were between the ages of 14-16  and sentenced as adults.  In 2002,  After serial rapist Matias Reyes  confessed to the crime along with a matching DNA , Supreme Court Justice Charles J. Tejada vacated their convictions. 

Ava Duvernay  is the director, writer and one of six Executive Producers.  Additional Executive Producers include, Jeff Skoll, Jonathan King, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh.   Will you watch?
